People living in rural Tennessee face unique challenges that affect both their physical and mental well-being. People often find it hard to get medical care because there are not many healthcare facilities. It’s common to have to travel long distances for care. There is also a shortage of healthcare workers, leading to long delays in getting essential services. The cost of healthcare is another barrier that many rural Tennesseans face. In this module, you will explore these and other challenges in rural communities and strategies and approaches to help address them.

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand special issues affecting rural communities including social drivers of health.
  2. Describe the current and future role of telehealth, as well as its limitations in rural communities.
  3. Discuss current efforts and issues affecting rural health in Tennessee.

Audience: Youth 16+; Adults exploring healthcare careers.
